Will the last man out please turn off the light, The Montauk Light that is. Somehow another Montauk Fall Run has slipped away. I don't know where it's gone, and I can't explain it. I have this empty feeling, it's like arriving at a destination but not knowing why your there. I'm experiencing pains of anxiety. I've spent the last three months immersed in "The Montauk Chowder," floating on a green sea with the sweet sent of Striper and Anchovy drifting in the air. I've had my face washed with the salt spray of millions of thrashing fish tails. I've listened to the boat banter of excited anglers hooked up to screaming reels. This can't possibly be over? But it is. Mother Nature has moved on and so must I. I will however remember the sights sounds and feeling that is so uniquely Montauk and take it with me. My last trip on Montauk was a Father and Son team on November 27. Eleven year old Henry and his Dad John chose a perfect day, 60 and sunny, a rare day in November on Montauk. John is an avid fly-fisherman and wanted nothing more than to feel the pull of a big fish on his 10wt.. Henry was content just to be spending time with his Dad. On the way out I convinced Dad to stop to catch a few herring. Henry was on immediately and couldn't hide his smile. Within a short time we had a live well full and were heading over the smooth water to a favorite rip. The tide just started moving. The herring were sent to the bottom and before the sinkers could bump Henry was on. There is something unexplainably about this experience to a young lad. Henry had a huge bend in his rod he braced himself against the side of the boat and put his back into it. It was a "Head Shak'a" as they call Stripers up North. Henry hung on while things got personnel between he and his fish. A short time later Henry landed a beauty, took time for a photo-op and released his grateful serpent back to the sea. Check him out on photos of the month. This is what makes it all worth while for me. I'd like to thank all my clients who take time from their busy lives to spend time in my world. It is you alone that make it possible. I am forever grateful. Happy Holidays! I am proud to announce that my son, Captain John Kanavy, has joined our Crew. John has grown up on the water, and he has fished before he started school. John was buzzing around the bay in his boat, Seaweed, and enjoying the comradeship of local watermen when he was still in elementary school. He is right at home, in his element, on the water. We have had wonderful feedback from his clients, and he is enjoying every minute of it. We all wish him the best. John is available for charters through our website. br>
